Professor Stephen Bullivant

Stephen Bullivant holds doctorates in theology (Oxford, 2009) and sociology (Warwick, 2019). His ongoing studies of contemporary (non)religion have received coverage from, among others, the BBC, Sky News, Fox, The New York Times, The Economist, The Times, The Guardian, and Der Spiegel. Prof. Bullivant’s most recent books include The Cambridge History of Atheism (CUP, 2021) and Nonverts: The Making of Ex-Christian America (OUP, 2022; forthcoming).

Stephen is Director of the Benedict XVI Centre for Religion and Society and Professor of Theology and the Sociology of Religion St Mary’s University Twickenham and Professorial Research Fellow in Theology and Sociology at the University of Notre Dame Australia. He is also the Principal Investigator of the Explaining Atheism funded project Explaining Arab atheism in the digital age.
