Alex Fry

Alex Fry is a Lecturer in the Sociology of Health and Illness in the Department of Social Sciences and Social Work, Bournemouth University. His previous projects have included: exploring the relationship between religious community participation and experiences of wellbeing in areas of social deprivation; and analysing and informing the Church of England’s public policy response (at the level of Parliament) to COVID-19 and the social consequences of AI, particularly in health and social care settings. Prior to this, he completed his PhD at Durham University on the social factors shaping clergy attitudes towards gender in the Church of England, focusing on the attitudes of clergymen who oppose the development of women’s ordination. A book based on this research is due to be published in 2023. Alex has also held teaching posts at the London School of Economics and Political Science and at Durham University. At the latter, he also held the William Leech Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. Between October 2022 and March 2023, Alex will be working with Sharon Jagger (York St John University) and the Church of England Ministry Development Team to explore the wellbeing of working-class clergy and the implications of this for Church policy.
