Portraits of unbelief

Project Lead

Start and end dates: 1 June 2023 – 30 June 2024
Award: £29,999

Photographer Aubrey Wade is working in conversation with researchers Dena Abbott and Melanie Brewster and their project Unbelief within marginalized communities. Wade will produce a new body of photographic and textual work that will take audiences on a visual journey to meet unbelievers across the United States.

Wade will collaborate with people who self identify with the subgroups represented in Abbott and Brewster’s work: transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) people, lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people, Black-identified people, Latino/a/e people, and ex-Muslim people. Together they will explore in words and images questions around how people create their identities in relation to systems that oppress them, sometimes on multiple grounds, and how people enact their plural overlapping identities, including unbelief, in relation to the social worlds and environments they inhabit and move through.

The project will produce a book of photographs and interviews, as well as teaching materials and a dedicated area on Wade’s website.
